Tips for finding a good real estate agent

On Behalf of | May 2, 2023 | Landlord-Tenant Law

Connecticut has plenty of real estate agents, so finding a compatible and competent person shouldn’t be too difficult. However, you might want to interview a few individuals before agreeing to work with anyone. Here are some of the characteristics to look for in an agent, whether you are buying or selling.

Compatible

Residential real estate agents come from various backgrounds and possess widely differing personalities. Depending on the market, you might be associated with an agent for months, so pick someone who connects with you. If they act nervous, condescending, pushy or arrogant, they may not be the right choice for you.

Experienced

Everyone has to start somewhere, but you don’t want to be anyone’s guinea pig. There is too much to know, and it takes time to develop the necessary skills. Negotiating tactics are a crucial part of a real estate transaction. There may be many back-and-forth discussions regarding sales price, good faith money, closing date, repairs, open permits and seller concessions. You want an experienced negotiator to help keep the deal from falling apart when the other party won’t budge on their position. Good negotiators know how to keep both sides communicating.

Local

You want a real estate agent who knows the neighborhoods you’re interested in. Someone who lives twenty miles away in another town might not be your best choice.

Accommodating

Real estate agents have busy lives just like you. If you’re a buyer who can only view properties on weekday evenings, ensure your agent can accommodate your needs. Or perhaps you’re a seller who doesn’t like the idea of strangers walking around your house during showings. You’re within your rights to request your listing agent to be there to watch over things. If they can’t do that, consider listing with someone else.

Real estate transactions don’t always progress smoothly. Find someone you can count on to close the deal.
